A four-month-old boy is recovering after having seven of his fingers chewed off by the family's pet ferret.
The newborn lost all but his two thumbs and a little finger during the savage attack while his parents slept.
Police said by the time his parents heard their son's screams the ferret had already done the damage.
The father killed the ferret after the attack while paramedics rushed the boy to hospital from his home in Grain Valley, Missouri.
A ferret attacked the four-month-old baby as it lay in its cradle while his parents slept
Doctors could do nothing to save the mangled fingers. Now the parents are under investigation for neglect and failure to obtain a $100 license for the exotic pet.
Grain Valley Police Chief Aaron Ambrose said the boy was asleep in his cradle when the ferret launched his attack.
It is not known if the ferret had escaped from its cage or was left to roam the home.
Chief Ambrose said one parent was asleep in the bedroom and another in the same room where the baby was asleep.
The father killed the ferret by slamming it into a wall after the 2.30am attack.
The dead animal is now being tested for diseases to see if that caused it to react in such a violent way.
'This is awful - a very, very unfortunate incident,' said Chief Ambrose.
Mary Geiger, co-founder of the Ferret Awareness Club in Bristol, Tennessee, an adoption and rescue group, said her group often advises families with children under 12 not to own ferrets.
Geiger said ferrets are docile but should be placed in their cages at night or when their owners are not home.
'They are several pounds of curiosity and mischief,' Geiger said. 'It is such a rare, rare event for them to attack.'
The baby is being treated in hospital, but police have not named the family.
Officers are consulting with prosecutors to see if any charges will be filed in the case.
Resumindo,
