The AKC Siberian and the AKC Malamute were largely created by Seely in the 1930s. She had dogs brought in from various parts of Alaska, Canada, Greenland and separated them out by size and a few other traits. This is is a Siberian, that one is going to be a Malamute. Bingo. Write a breed standard highlighting certain differences that will be emphasized to distinguish two separate breeds and you're on your way to two new AKC breeds.

Some of the photos I've looked at in anthropology texts of the Chukchi people show sled dogs that look remarkably like Malamutes. The Siberian dogs were taller with larger bone and heavier coats than one sees today. Probably one large generic pool of northern dogs across the arctic with smaller isolated populations showing some divergence. The division into separate breeds (Siberian and Malamute) was a human one, not necessarily one that existed out there in nature.
