UN interview. Veterinarian and animal rights activist Erik Schmid (56) and behavior biologist Ursula Aigner (32)
"Cruel training methods" by Verena Daum Kashyap
Animal rights activists oppose the well-known TV "Dog Whisperer" Cesar Millan.
SCHWARZACH. As specialist veterinarian, animal rights activists and member of the Audit Commission for animal welfare-qualified instructors at the Institute of Messerli Erik Schmid committed to give a clear warning to the adverse welfare methods of Mr Millan. "I'll at the competent district administrative authority display, to halt this unsustainable practice at least
administratively." Strangulation is not only technically wrong, but also clearly prohibited.
ERIK SCHMID, VETERINARIAN
The so-called TV "Dog Whisperer" Cesar Millan applies animal torturous methods in his shows according to the "American Veterinary Society of animal behavior", which is misguiding dog owners completely.
AB: Cesar Millan is advertising to make "dangerous" dogs again quiet through his training. In fact, he achieves the opposite: its methodology consists of forced and punitive measures. The dogs are strangled by thin collars and made submissive with kicks to the kidney area. Millan also
applies - forbidden in Austria - barbed and electric shock collar which is very painful for dogs. His hissing before the punishment scares the animals so strongly that they dare not to do anything anymore. Millan presents this as relaxation, in reality the dogs are forced into the so
called "learned helplessness" (
http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erlernte_Hilflosigkeit) and fall into a
depressed-lethargic state from fear of punishment. Animal welfare and safety secure knowledge about the needs of dogs.
URSULA AIGNER, BEHAVIOR BIOLOGIST
SCHMID: Offside of this cruelty to animals is a danger that the dogs at some point start to resist out of fear; they are ticking time bombs: violence generates counter-violence, and that already starts with the line jerk. There are countless videos on the Internet in which Millan himself is
bitten. Bad dog? No, in fact pure self-defense. The problem behavior is getting worse. Mr Millan is advertising for the company Merial. This involves medicines for pets. The "European society of veterinary clinical ethology" sentenced TV channels which propagate this cruelty.
AIGNER: Millan breaks dogs through fear. To force a dog to "submit" is apparently better for the TV audience than to positively reinforce desired behavior with treats. Only reward oriented training changed the associations of the dog in a positive way. But that requires more knowledge about the expression and learning behavior of dogs, as the broadcast format allows. Unfortunately, dog owners mimic Millans methods, a frightening development, because they
potentially represent a threat to the environment! Only training with motivation and reward, the use of dog-friendly equipment such as chest harness instead of collar, and knowledge about the needs of our dogs guarantee animal welfare and safety.
SCHMID: Also the BHV (Professional Association of HundeerzieherInnen and VerhaltensberaterInnen eV) and the IBH (International Association of professional dog trainers) disapprove unanimously his method as contrary to animal welfare and dangerous to public safety. The pharmaceutical industry is of course interested to sell as many drugs for dogs. The
methods of Millan guarantee that the dog owners in their desperation resort to sedatives for themselves and the dog. For many dogs this means ultimately lethal injection. How do you put an end to this drive?
SCHMID: According to § 5 2 Z 3.a. ABS the use of tools that aim to influence the behavior of an animal by penalty stimuli or by hardness is forbidden. What Mr Millan publicly and proudly presents - about "Endless shrike" / strangulation – is not only professionally wrong, but it is
clearly prohibited. The inflicting of pain is also completely unnecessary, since there are enough non-violent alternative reward-based methods. Who uses Millans methods, violates the animal welfare act and must be reported to the police, the veterinarian or BH. The penalty is between
7,500 and 15,000 euro. In case of damage, the liability insurance can get off because the cause event, the bite injury, was challenged by improper handling with the dog. This can be occur in the injury of a child with permanent damage as well as psychological consequences. Therefore
the public needs to be informed about the dangers associated with use of these methods.
