There is a huge difference between the American Boxer and the European Boxer. I will start this explanation with "function". The Boxer was bred to WORK and if the dog is not capable of doing this work then we have something that has become a new breed entirely. United States breeders have never bred boxers for work but instead focused on cosmetic appearance. As a result of this the American Boxer has changed in ways that I cannot condone. We see now dogs that have no depth of chest, absolutely no bone density, they have very long muzzles with a lack of depth and width, the upper arm has become shorter in response to the lack of chest depth and as a result the rears have become over angulated and the topline has become flat as a table top instead of the "slightly sloping" that the breed standard calls for. The American Boxer has also lost it's drive, temperament and ability to focus. I have seen so many boxers here in the states that can't even focus long enough to obtain an obedience title, is that a "working dog"?
European breeders work their boxers in Schutzhund, french ringsport or other similar forms like the IPO which includes OBEDIENCE, TRACKING and PROTECTION WORK. The European Boxers as a result are completely different in appearance, structure, temperament and drive. Form follows function and the European boxers function is work. These boxers have deep, powerful chests, thick strong bone structures and more muscle in one shoulder that an American boxer has in it's whole body. The head has a short, powerful jaw that is both wide and deep. These are things that our breed standard calls for so why do the American dogs lack these features? It is because American breeders don't work their dogs. I believe that less than 5% of the dogs that are Champions in the American Boxer ring could ever obtain any kind of working title.
