a mineral based cat litter or cheap supermarket brand 'paper' based cat litter. The symptoms are as per pituitary tumour/stroke/ear infection – head tilt, listless, unable to hold food properly, loss of balance and in 5 cases the rats have died.

Cat litters are designed for cats and even cats are not expected to actually live on cat litter. The products we have listed are excellent, safe litters for rats. Do not use any other cat litter. Some litters that claim to be paper-based are, in fact, by-products of the paper industry and contain harmful chemicals. Other litters, such as clay-based litters contain 'clogging agents' which can be lethal for rats (there is even some suggestion that they may be a health hazard for cats too!)

It is important never to use Cedar or Pine shavings for litter or bedding. These litters contain TOXIC hydrocarbons. You see, these woods are called “softwoods”. The oils that give these woods their scent is what causes the problem. When inhaled, the chemicals change the amount of enzymes the liver produces. Long term exposure to these chemicals actually causes damage to the liver and immunesystem, making the animal more susceptible to respiratory diseases such as Mycoplasma. These toxins may also cause cancer. Clay cat litters are too dusty for rats. No matter what the box says (like 99.9% dust free), stay away from them.
