Mostly I think that a cat loves to enjoy his owner's company and so I think that it would be difficult for the cats to spend less time with their owner's.
Yet you and your husband shall decide what's best for them because it depends of the cats character also, of course that our animal's are our responsability and they don't have fault of our choices, whatever you do the only advice I can give is to alway's give them love and afection, above their liberty, that's what they preserve the most.
About the cages, I wouldn't like to do that to my cats and I think that just because they born Persian ou Ragdoll don't necessarily have to mean that they see themselves conditionated in terms of space and afection (this last point happens all the time).
I really don't want to believe that that precious living beeings should have to find a new home, it would be very painfull for them, even more than the cages solution.

I´ve read your diary and I´m sorry for all the trouble you had because of that " smart" kitten.... Now you know...6 months its enough!
I agree that you, with all your experience know what´s best for the cats....but keeping them in cages?!... can´t you keep them apart in separate rooms?
By the way are you going to Setubal?

Os meus parabéns pela decisão muito acertada que tomou. A primeira impressão ao ler o seu tópico foi de espanto: então a Diane, uma pessoa que eu considerava, ia desfazer-se dos gatos? Não respondi na altura pois fiquei em estado de choque, agora ao ler a sua decisão, fiquei muito, muito contente, afginal eu não me tinha enganado, a Diane não era capaz de se desfazer dos seus gatos e arranjou uma solução para a resolução do problema.
