Bem – vindo em www.mdr1-defekt.de
Please excuse me writing in English, but unfortunately I do not speak Portuguese.
But I have important informations for all owners and friends of the Collie and related breeds.
Collies react more sensitively to certain medical substances like Ivermectin. This was already detected by breeders years ago - some of their dogs died. They talked about "the ivermectin-sensitive Collie" and they were concerned about this and asked their vets.
So in several countries, research was conducted.
In 2001 in the USA, the reason for this sensitivity was discovered:
This reason is a serious gene defect within the so called "MDR1 gene".
"MDR" means "multi drug resistance" - and due to the defect about 30% of all Collies don´t have this resistance.
So not only Ivermectin but many other medical substances can cause unwelcome side effects - some of them fatal.
And the lists showing this medical substances are still growing.
There is a test to see whether a dog is affected by the defect or not.
You can search the web for more informations and you can look here:
1. http://www.vetmed.wsu.edu/depts-VCPL/#Drugs (in English)
2. http://www.mdr1-defekt.de/index.php?lang=PT (in English and German and Portuguese)
I hope that this will be of some interest for you.
Please excuse the disturbance - and ask, if you have more questions!
With greetings from Germany,
Kris
